ABOUT SABAYA

Sabaya Bellydance Collective is a dynamic group of Austin-based professional bellydancers that perform regularly at nightclubs, private parties, weddings, festivals, concerts, corporate events, theater and charitable benefits. Sabaya celebrates Middle Eastern dance, music, food, and culture by producing "Sahara Nights" on the second Saturday of every month in Austin, Texas at Copa.

The founding members of Sabaya are Lily, Maribel, Rania, Stacey Lizette and Yasmin. Together, they have traveled to Egypt to study privately with Aida Nour, Randa Kamal, Yasmina, as well as Magda and Atef Farag, the chief choreographers of the Reda Folkloric troupe. In America, Sabaya has primarily studied under Aziza and Suhaila Salimpour. As a result, each member is at least Level 1 certified in the Suhaila Salimpour format, with some being certified at Level 2 and Level 3.

In addition to dancing in and around Austin, Sabaya members have performed on the stages of Egypt’s Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival, Barcelona's La Merce Festival, Amani's Oriental Festival in Lebanon, Dallas’ Little Egypt Festival, California’s Rakkasah Middle Eastern Dance Festival, Chicago’s Lollapalooza, Baltimore’s Virgin Music Festival, and special events in Brazil, Bolivia, Europe, London, Taiwan, New Zealand, Mexico, and Canada.

Recent achievements include dancing at the opening gala of the Dallas Fine Art Museum's "King Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaoh's" exhibit in October 2008; opening for the Egyptian dance legend Aida Nour at the Little Egypt Festival; performing at the International Music and Dance Festival 2008 (as well as the Austin SXSW VIP Film party); participation in the Global Harmony Concerts to promote world peace and music, and the November 2008 Troupe Spotlight in the Joy of Bellydancing website.
